Supporting local and indigenous communities |

A potencial 6 million hectares of forest
will come under the management of indigenous communities - Tierras Comunitarias de Origen
(TCOs) and an additional 2-3 million hectares will come under the management of municipal
groups - Asociaciones Sociales de Lugar (ASLs). Certification imposes mandatory protection
of certain biodiversity corridors in forest to protect threatened wildlife, plant species,
sites of special scientific interest; as well as ensuring the application of well-managed
forest practices.
These and other responsabilities are increasingly being recognised by indigenous
communities. As a consequence, communities are beginning to realise the potential of
certification in protecting their forest land areas, social ways of life and improving
their livelihoods and incomes. In realisation of this opportunity, many TCOs and ASLs are
seriosly advocating the certification of their forests and are expressing a keen desire to
develop business relationships wiht timber processing companies. |
